"Now we know who stylish heartthrob George Clooney looks to for inspiration: Cary Grant! George, 45, gave his Ocean's Thirteen co-stars Brad Pitt and Ellen Barkin a special coffee table book: Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style by Richard Torregrossa, a source tells Star magazine. 'George is a big fan of Cary Grant,' the source says. 'He wanted to give his friends something special--from the heart.' "

As we write this, Turner Classic Movies is screening, back-to-back, 24 hours of Cary Grant movies a dozen in all. Watching him in films like Notorious, North by Northwest, Suspicion, and To Catch a Thief, the four pictures he made with Alfred Hitchcock, it is hard to realize that we are observing the 20th anniversary of his death. We can be thankful for the cutting-edge technology of modern electronics like TiVo and including cable television, notably TCM and AMC [American Movie Classics], for keeping the legacy of the suavely handsome and legendary actor in our consciousness. And amazing books like Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style (Bulfinch Press). Here's how Amazon.com describes this excellent book on the quintessential style-setter. His sense of style so integral to who [sic] he was both onscreen and off has been admired, copied, emulated and lauded, but never fully examined until now. With rare and never-before-published photographs and exclusive interviews with film and fashion luminaries, this groundbreaking book reveals the style secrets that helped make Grant a fashion icon and a perennial inspiration to fans and fashion designers alike. The book is the work of fashion and style journalist Richard Torregrossa.

One of Grants co-stars interviewed for the book was Eva Marie Saint [North by Northwest] who said, [Cary] said his secret was that he was never quite in fashion. He never went by fads. The things that he wore were the classic line. And he knew what looked good on him. And Cary himself was known to say, Everybody wants  to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant. As if to prove that point, George Clooney, the closest we have to Cary Grant today, has presented his Ocean's Thirteen cast mates, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, among them, copies of the lavishly illustrated coffee-table tome, Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style. And to make sure they get it right, George has gifted Brad and Matt each a pair of  cufflinks. Apparently, George feels it is time to bring back some of the old-fashioned glamour that was a signature of the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood.
